I have to rewrite this sentence ("My travel expenses are low because I live and work in the cityI centre")

Both sentences have the have the same meaning?? someone check my answer please. Thanks in advance!

"If I didn't live and work in the city centre, my travel expenses would be high "

They have the same meaning, but I think downtown would work better, instead of centre, because you mean el centro de la ciudad right?
