Si es un cuento o una obra literaria de ficción, me parece que el sentido es: "What importance does the inventory have in the story?". Si es un cuento donde tomaron o hicieron una lista de los contenidos de algo (un inventario), entonces yo lo traduciría así. Pero sin un contexto, es difícil saber a ciencia cierta a qué se refiere la oración.
