Salir or dejar?

Salir is used to describe the process of leaving a location. Dejar is used to describe stopping an action, or to say let or permit. Dejar is also used to mean the action of leaving an object.

Salga de la clase = leave the classroom.
Sali de la casa a las 7am = I left my house at 7 in the morning.

Deja de tocar eso = stop touching that.
no sé dónde dejé las llaves = I don't know where I left my keys
Dejame ver = let me see.
Dejó de bailar a ella = she gave up dancing.

Salir = (to go out, to leave)
Meanings and uses of salir:

1º-To go from the inside to the outside:
- Salgo de trabajar a las 9.

2º-To go from one place to another:
- El autobús sale desde Murcia hacia Valencia a las 10 de la mañana.


Dejar= (to leave/to allow)

Meanings and uses of dejar:

1º-To drop or leave some object somewhere:
- Dejé mi coche en el garaje

2º-To retire, to move away from a person or a thing:
- Su madre dejó de trabajar cuando tenía 50 años.

3º-To allow, to consent:
- No me dejan fumar aquí

Salir is used when you are talking about leave a place (Only). And Dejar is used when you are talking about stopping an action, or to let or permit. Also is used to talk about leave a place or an object.

e.g.

Salí del edificio
Salgo a las 3 pm de la escuela.

Deje el apartamento
Deje mis cosas en el gimnasio
Déjame jugar

Hello Jacqui, I'll try to explain this clearly... when you use 'dejar', it means that you'll never be there again, for example: 'yo dejé mi casa' (I left my house) or 'ahora dejo esta página web' (I'll leave this web page now). The verb 'dejar' means 'leave' or 'let'. But if you're using it as 'leave' it means that you're not going to do it or be there again.

If you use 'salir', you're meaning something that could happen through a period of time. For example: 'voy a salir esta noche' (I'll go out tonight) or 'voy a salir de la página por un rato' (I'll sign out from the page for a while).

So here you have pairs to compare the meanings:

*Voy a dejar la página (para siempre) = I'll leave the page (for ever).
*Voy a salir de la página (por un rato) = I'll sign out the page (for a while).
