Hello Heather :) let's see... Actually, I have heard that word before. I'm pretty sure that is chilean slang (I don't know about the rest of Latin America) and its meaning it is something like..

Well, CHUATA is an expression that means CHU…A …T….MADRE (not very nice), is like when you mess something up...

¡Chuata! ¡me equivoqué! --> crap! I messed it up!

In Mexico it would be "Chanfle"

It's me again... "chuata" (chilean slang) appearently has more than one meaning.

Let's see.. It can be used when someone tells you something that you did not want to hear (bad news). Like that stinks, that sucks...

For example:

Mike: I got an F on my paper

Tim: ¡Chuata! (¡Qué fome! and ¡Qué lata! are synonyms)

El diccionario de la real academia de la lengua no la reconoce como palabra, yo pienso que es un apodo o una palabra compuesta o tal vez algun localismo. Me gustaria saber en donde la oiste.
The Dictionary doesn't recognize that word I think that's a nick name or an invented word or maybe a localism. I'd like to know where did you heard this word?

Hi Heather, as Yero told you "Chuata" is a chilean idiom, it is derivated from other idiom called "CHUTA".

And the Yero's example is right,

¡Chuata! ¡me equivoqué! --> crap! I messed it up!

you can use that expression in a lot of cases, like in sorprise, admiration, etc. :)

la palabra chuta se utiliza para el futbool es cuando un jugador patea y en algunos lugares de mexico dicen chutala o chuta el balon

I think that the word that you say it´s "chata" that word is "common" in Spain.
It´s like "girl"......and boy is "chato". Maybe it´s the word that you say, but i´m not sure
